What Exactly is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a scientifically validated approach that helps individuals improve socially significant behaviors. Some common areas of focus for therapy include communication, social skills, self-care, academics, and even play. At its core, ABA focuses on understanding how behavior works, how it’s affected by the environment, and how learning happens. By identifying the function(s) behind behavior, BCBAs, or Board Certified Behavior Analysts, may accurately replace unwanted or maladaptive behaviors with adaptive, functional ones, improving an individual’s daily life.

One of the key differences between ABA and other types of therapy, such as talk therapy or occupational therapy, is its focus on observable behavior and data. ABA uses structured methods to track progress and make decisions in real time. For example, a mental health counselor might work with an individual to process tough emotions related to a traumatic event; in the same individual, a behavior analyst could help teach ways for them to be around a triggering scenario calmly, rather than avoiding it.

Unlike traditional psychotherapy, ABA doesn’t rely on insight or emotional processing to create change. Instead, it focuses on practical, real-world applications tailored to each individual. Whether someone is learning to follow instructions, build peer relationships, or reduce challenging behaviors, ABA therapy breaks goals into manageable steps and reinforces progress along the way.
